Layer different functional lighting types to create drama

Although a critical part of any room's function and decor, lamps & lighting are often one of the last items to be considered when decorating a room.

This is often a mistake, as proper lighting will not only serve to increase the function of a room, it has a significant impact on the style and impact of a room.

One lighting trick is to aim for a mixture of lighting types when redecorating or renovating a room. The combination of recessed lighting, sconces, ceiling fixtures, lighting kickers (under-cabinet lights, lights inside display shelves, etc.) and table lamps to create a range of lighting options.

Add dimmers and timers where needed to allow you to vary the look, feel and function of a room's light sources.
