Think Your Five Year Old Could Have Painted That? Maybe He or She Did...
Tuesday, September 8, 2009
Have you've ever looked at a piece of art with dismay, firmly believing that a five year old child could have painted it?According to a new decor trend, kids art is taking it's place in homes alongside the professionals.
Stacy Downs of The Stamford Times recently documented a new trend towards combining contemporary art pieces with children's drawings to create an ecclectic, personalized look.
Some see it as a statement on the creative freedom of children, some see it as a slap in the art world's face, but - the most shocking part - some don't know even the difference.
The book "Downtown Chic" shows how one family framed and displayed their children's art and blended it with a combination of yard sale finds and expensive furnishings to create an ecclectic look. "Many of our friends who are art aficionados ask us if it was done by a well-known artist," says the authors of Downtown Chic. "They are always a little embarrassed when we tell them it's by our kids."
Given this trend, it appears that the refrigerator is no longer the sole refuge of children's art. However, in order to keep that high end look, it is recommended to avoid the usage of Gold Stars as part of the decorative motif.
